Overview
The Student Board Member Two-Day Program is held in conjunction with the Annual Education Conference and Trade Show. Student board members are integral to district and county boards, ensuring students’ voices are heard and included in the governance team. The Student Board Member Two-Day Program at AEC is a statewide professional development opportunity in which student board members can expand their governance and leadership horizons.
The first day will touch upon basic elements of good governance, roles and responsibilities, budget basics, and best practices in communication. Participants will be led through exercises to develop an action plan for community engagement. They will learn how to advocate for student concerns and how to present this information to the board while advocating for funding priorities in support of the Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) and Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) funding. Students will work in small groups, collaborating on best practices, and learning from peer experiences.
On the second day, students will join us at the Disney Leadership Assembly and discover the magic of leadership through Disney Imagination Campus. Participants will embark on an immersive experience designed to empower future leaders with the tools, mindset, and inspiration to make a difference in their communities and beyond.
This initiative invites students to interact with industry experts, partake in dynamic leadership exercises, and delve into hands-on learning experiences. Upon completion of the Disney Leadership Assembly, students are free to enjoy the rest of the theme park.
Program
Through various presentations, discussions, and interactive exercises, student trustees are introduced to the principles of good governance, share ideas on best practices, and build a network among their peers. This engaging training will provide student board members with the resources necessary to enhance their role on their governance team. The Disney Leadership Assembly offers leadership principles emphasizing that leadership is accessible to all. Students will uncover strategies for effective communication, critical thinking, and fostering innovation through interactive sessions.

Each student can register one student guest for AEC from Dec 5-7, 2024. A student guest can be a parent, legal guardian, or family member. The student guest must check-in at registration to receive their badge credentials. The registration fee for a student guest is $175. A guest is defined as a parent, legal guardian, or family member who is not affiliated with or employed by a California school district or county office of education (including board members, administrators, teachers, or staff). Co-workers or associates are not eligible to use the guest registration category. If this registration category is used by someone other than a guest, the registrant will be charged a full conference registration rate for that person.
