Overview
The Legal Symposium for Experienced Board Members is a full-day pre-conference activity held in conjunction with the Annual Education Conference and Trade Show. California licensed attorneys will offer the legal perspective on timely and complex issues boards often face. Attendees will learn how to justly handle a variety of common legal situations they may encounter as board members.
Program
The Legal Symposium is a quality investment in your professional development. During this pre-conference session, CSBA, in conjunction with California Council of School Attorneys (CCSA)*, will offer a range of sessions on the timely and complex issues boards often face and sessions on current topics. Up to 5.75 hours of Minimum Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) credit is available for California attorneys.
Who should attend?
This seminar is designed for veteran board members who have a solid understanding of their board role. Please note that registration is required for all attendees and there is no onsite registration for this program.

The registration fee is $500, including breakfast and lunch. Registrations received after Nov. 12, 2024, will be charged the late registration fee of $575. There is limited space for this dynamic program, so sign up early! There is no onsite registration for pre-conference activities.

Whether serving as a board president or preparing to serve, leading a board requires strong leadership, strategic vision and skill to develop and maintain a cohesive governance team. The CSBA Board Presidents Workshop provides the strategies and tools to prepare you to be more effective in your role. Board members build upon skills and knowledge as they gain tips, tactics and techniques to lead their boards more effectively.
Program
The Board Presidents Workshop offers chances to reflect and discuss, delving into your personal leadership and communication styles to craft your Leadership Plan. This journey begins with exploring your own vision for your board, then moves on to improving your communication with the board to enhance your leadership effectiveness. Ultimately, you’ll be introduced to tools used to conduct efficient and effective board meetings.
Who should attend?
The Board Presidents Workshop is designed for current and aspiring board presidents seeking to enhance their skills in leading their boards more effectively.

Overview
This full-day program is tailored to meet the needs of new board members. Facilitated by CSBA faculty, this session will provide new trustees with the essential information and resources necessary to successfully manage the first months of serving on their board.
Program
During this workshop, members will explore the critical elements of their roles and responsibilities, what it means to be a governance team member, and the connection between effective governance teams and student achievement. Participants will also be introduced to the supportive structures and processes CSBA offers to governance teams.
Participants will walk away with practical and applicable knowledge related to time commitment, board meeting protocols, and the importance of a positive board culture for operational effectiveness as a high-functioning governance team. New trustees will also leave with an understanding of the importance of essential guiding documents (mission, vision, core values) and how they impact student success and achievement.
Who should attend?
The Orientation for New Trustees is a curated professional development program designed for new board members. It offers opportunities to meet and engage with other new trustees and Masters in Governance (MIG) faculty members. Superintendents are encouraged to attend with their board members and are required to register as participants.

Overview
This program is recommended for experienced board members, board presidents, and superintendents who have served at least four or more years in office, attended two AEC conferences and completed Masters in Governance (MIG) courses in Finance, Policy Judicial Review and Human Resources. The concepts are advanced, focus on districtwide best practices, and are facilitated by the CSBA MIG and Governance Consulting Services faculty.
Program
The session will provide opportunities to analyze current underserved student data, superintendent effectiveness, fiscal management and LCAP implementation and explore potential solutions that can be implemented at county offices of education and school districts of all types. Content will respond to participant needs and may include building a cohesive and representative governance team, use of data to inform board decisions, conflict resolution, mentoring board members, critical conversations among trustees or with the public, finding common ground, board member knowledge-based solutions or other topics identified by participants.
Who should attend?
This course is designed specifically for board members who have completed more than two years of service in their educational agencies and who seek to expand their understanding of concepts and practices to support effective governance systems and maintain a focus on student success and achievement. A recommended pre-requisite for the program is attendance and completion of the MIG series for district or county boards.

Assembly Bill 2158 mandated school board ethics training every two years — CSBA can help you ensure you are compliant!

Overview
Assembly Bill 2158, signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newsom in September 2022, mandates school district governing boards, county boards of education and charter school governing bodies to complete ethics training every two years during their term of service. Previously exempt, these entities are now required to complete ethics training, with the law applying to those elected in the November 2022 election and serving as of January 1, 2025.
Program
Attendees will gain insights into the ethical responsibilities required by California law, such as financial conflicts of interest, gift regulations and Form 700 reporting. Led by licensed California attorneys, CSBA’s training equips board members to manage conflicts of interest and navigate ethical dilemmas effectively, fulfilling AB 2158’s requirements. Participants who successfully complete the course will be awarded a certificate of completion.
Who should attend?
Members of school district governing boards, county boards of education and charter school governing bodies are encouraged to participate in the training, regardless of whether they receive compensation, salary, stipend or reimbursement for actual and necessary expenses incurred in the performance of official duties (Gov. Code § 53234).
